Guess what day it is . . . Guess what day it is!! Not only is it hump day, but it's also National Lipstick Day. That's right. A whole day dedicated to this beauty staple. I must admit, I'm an advocate for these national days, mainly because they come with discounts and sales. Before I get into sharing which brands are offering sales today, let's get into short story time.
Do you remember the first bold lip color that you wore with confidence? Mine was red! Maybe because I went to college at NC State, who really knows. I do remember that it took time for me to be able to confidently wear this color in public. When it was new to me, I would put on red lipstick before class, then take a few pictures, and eventually wiped it off before I left and went the day with lip gloss. Why? I had to get used to seeing myself in a different way, and needed to be secure in that before I presented it to the world.
I do think, subconsciously, there were undertones of past images and depictions of Black people, and the inaccurate and harmful stereotypes associated with my race that were deep in my mind. The movie Bamboozled by Spike Lee was a hard one to watch, but necessary, and I remember watching it in one of my college courses. Those daunting scenes of Manray and Womack smearing on that red lipstick and going out on stage, while reinforcing negative stereotypes of Black people was a lot, and the furthest from how we should be viewed. However, like the late great Maya Angelou once said, "still I rise."
So, I mustered up the confidence to wear the color and stopped subconsciously worrying about how others would view me in the bold red color, because that is their issue. Not mine. Quickly, it became my go to color and in a good way people began to associate me with the bold beauty statement. Even so much as to have a colleague refer to her excitement about wearing a red lip color being like my beauty staple.
I shared that to say, if you need time to build your beauty confidence, take all the time you need. Wear the colors that you want to wear, because they bring you joy. Don't shy away from them because you think they may be too much for some people. It's your face. I like to think of my face as a blank canvas, and I'm going to paint it how I feel it should be painted . . . and you should too! Don't let the ignorance of others deter you from living out your goals, desires, and passions.

Red is one of those colors that takes time! Thank you SO much!! It took me a minute to get comfortable in red, but once I got there it became one of my loves. I'm glad that you loved the list!
