Spa days are needed more than I realized. During the pandemic, pausing them due to spa closures and safety precautions forced me to find other positive outlets to release the stress in my body. Utilizing spa services at the Ritz-Carlton spa could not have come at a better time. My first time visiting the spa was in May 2024. I just wrapped an intense semester of graduate school where my classes were accelerated, which meant learning five months of material within 7.5 weeks. That coupled with leading a title sports sponsorship for a Fortune 500 company, and living my own life, as a human being was a lot. I always remind myself that I am worthy of rest and success. As soon as that sports event wrapped, my vacation was already set and work emails were not checked.
For whatever reason, the world wants women to feel guilty for prioritizing ourselves. The best part is that I don’t and I won’t because I am the only person who is 100% responsible for taking care of myself and that is an honor. One that I take very seriously. When I was a little girl, I used to love at-home spa days. Placing cucumbers on my eyes, painting my nails, and doing my hair. All of which I still love to do, but the older that I get the more I want to be pampered. Just because I can do for myself all of the time, doesn’t mean that it is necessary.
At-home spa rituals are still amazing, but notice the one that I did not list is a massage. That would be incredibly difficult for anyone to do on their own. I purchased a massage chair pad to get the kinks out, but sometimes it leaves me more tense than before because the kneading is too intense for my spine. Off to the Ritz-Carlton I went! THE SHIFT FROM SOUTH CHARLOTTE TO DOWNTOWN
My mind and my wallet are often at odds with each other as I love luxury experiences, but when it is time to level up in luxury, there is hesitation. Though, shifting from a Four-Star service in the The Spa at Ballantyne to the Five-Star hotel spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte brought more excitement. There had been a change in management at Ballantyne and having been a loyal customer for eight years, I was not a fan of how the previous spa director spoke to me. Knowing that respect is the minimum, I immediately found an establishment that would treat me better. The Spa at Ballantyne is now under new management and my relationship with them has been restored, most recently attending their private customer appreciation event last week. The shift to the Ritz-Carlton proved to be a testament to why adding variety to your life is necessary, and to never settle for less than you deserve.
Spoiler Alert: Massage therapists in Charlotte typically switch between the Ballantyne Hotel and the Ritz-Carlton. While the services are specialized, the hands doing the work can be the same. In my experience, the therapist who became my go-to person at The Ritz was actually a masseuse I remember seeing at Ballantyne Spa. OVERVIEW OF THE RITZ-CARLTON SPA, CHARLOTTE
The Ritz-Carlton hotel is a beautiful 18-story hotel in the heart of downtown Charlotte. Their lobby features an upscale restaurant and a gorgeous layout that is breathtaking, especially during the holiday season. During that time, they deck it out with Christmas trees and sparkling decorations that are unmatched. Seeing that before heading to the spa is always a treat.
To utilize spa services, you must be 18 years old and that also applies to use of female and male lounges. Salon services are different as those of all ages are welcome to experience professional nail and hair services. If you’re someone staying at the hotel but want to take advantage of being near a spa without booking a service, you are welcome to purchase a pass to use spa amenities for $50/day. Maybe you’re someone who wants to choose a self-care day on a whim and doesn’t want to get a spa service. You are still in luck because you can purchase an access pass to use its amenities, Monday through Thursday, though they exclude weekends (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) and holidays. If you’re not booking a spa appointment you will also have to pay for valet parking which costs $15. Honestly, the day pass route is very expensive because it rounds out to $190 once you include parking. Their 60-minute massages are approximately $210, so it is worth it if you have extra funds to spare. Just know that all services are charged 20% gratuity. If you do book a spa service, do not forget its date or time. They provide a courtesy call the day before to remind you as well. Their cancellation policy is 24 hours. Not cancelling within that timeframe will cost you the full price of your service. I don’t know about you, but I would but much rather use that money for stress relief than to throw it down the drain. If an emergency comes up and you really are not able to attend, they charge $100 to reschedule if you’re in the 24-hour window. That lessens the blow a bit, though still extreme. The cancellation charge for group services requires four-weeks. Definitely put these times down on your calendar for your wallet’s sake. THE JOURNEY TO SPA CHECK-IN
The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte Spa is an experience of its own. The journey to get there is the least bit calming. As a Charlotte native, I am used to the traffic and the aggressive nature of drivers on the road. This is why it is so important to give yourself an adequate commute time. If your appointment is at 3:00 PM, arriving by 1:30 PM works best.
They offer valet parking, which was a change for me. At Ballantyne, I could arrive five minutes before my massage and head downstairs. Not saying that was a calming experience either, but I’m built different. At the Ritz, with valet, you have to arrive and allow for any backup in their current queue. You then let them know you’re there for the spa and they will give you a valet claim ticket, one that you’ll get validated upon checking out from the spa. Depending on how crowded the hotel is, you might have to wait for the elevator. All of this can take at least 15 minutes. The spa and its amenities are penthouse style and sit on the top levels of the Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte hotel. The spa desk is on the 17th floor where you will check-in and be walked to the appropriate locker room by a spa attendant. MY GO TO MASSAGE SERVICE AT THE RITZ
I did not capture a picture of the massage room like I did for the Ballantyne Spa review because I have worked to be more present. What truly drew me to the Ritz was their expansive time offerings. Having frequented Ballantyne for so long, I was accustomed to their 50-minute or 80-minute windows. The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Charlotte’s 60-minute and 90-minute services are an absolute game changer. When you are truly relaxing, every minute feels like a gift.
If you happen to be running behind, their late policy is that your delay will eat into your massage time as it will still end as scheduled. Be as punctual as possible and heed my arrival time advice mentioned earlier. Himalayan Stone Massages are becoming more popular due to their mineral properties and its 90-minute massage immediately jumped off the page as the one that was for me. Unlike traditional smooth river stones, these are more rigid and provide a subtle, invigorating exfoliation. It doesn’t have enough edge to be painful; it is just right. Each time that I have visited this spa, that has been my massage. I hold tension in my body, so selecting a service with hot stones has always helped to knead the pressure out of my muscles. I view this service as the essential prerequisite to enjoying their Himalayan Salt Room. For an investment this significant, I want to leave feeling like a completely new woman. SPA LEVEL AMENITIES ON THE 17TH FLOOR (LOUNGE, SALT ROOM, SAUNA, SHOWER)
I can only speak for the female amenities as it is all-encompassing. The locker room itself is tucked away in a corner as I did not grab photos due to other ladies changing in the area. Nearby is the vanity area, that hosts two private restrooms with frosted glass doors, slightly shown in the expanded photo above.
I captured the moment to make the memory last. The space is stocked with hand wash and hand lotion that smells luxurious. Luxury hotels love to use Molton Brown products, but the exact brand name of the products in that space remain a mystery. Near the spa checkout, they have a plethora of Archipelago products which smell amazing and they have options exclusive to The Ritz-Carlton, so it very well could be a scent from that brand. More importantly, the space is anchored by expansive marble vanities and stone surfaces that feel cool to the touch and impeccably clean. The modern plumbing fixtures and gold-toned fittings add a warm, metallic contrast to the neutral palette, elevating the vanity area from a simple bathroom. Its perfect lighting essentially makes it a studio for incredible selfies. Every detail, from the backlit mirrors to the custom cabinetry, is designed to make the transition from the bustling streets of downtown to a state of total relaxation feel seamless.
Lounge
Their lounge area is interesting as there are two areas, side-by-side, that look like this room. The ambiance is set with chime filled spa tunes that are very calming. The curtains are the same as those featured in the massage rooms, varying in size and offer a slight remedy against the sun. Personally, I have not spent time in the lounge rooms as my favorite chill spot is by the pool. However, during summer months, this lounge could be a great place to relax as the pool area is open to hotel guest and their kids. For a day spent unplugging, this area would serve you well.
Himalayan Salt Room
While the mineral-rich properties of Himalayan Salt drew me to this room initially, the water makes me stay. I intentionally seek out this sanctuary, sometimes just to stay hydrated. Often, luxury spas love to offer water infused with fruit, much like the station located just outside the lounge. I love the simple things in life, so if you are ever in search of crisp, plain water, this is your room.
Despite the amber radiance of the salt walls, this environment won't dehydrate you. Its glow had me fooled. I walked in expecting a sauna-like heat, but the reality was quite the opposite. The air is cool and incredibly fresh. I often bring a few extra towels in with me to add softness to the wooden benches and to provide a layer of warmth. It really is a place to rest and regulate your nervous system. The true luxury here is the detoxifying atmosphere. On a topical level, the essential minerals found in pink salt — like magnesium and potassium — help the skin retain moisture and calm the senses. You aren't just sitting in a pretty room; you are soaking in a stillness that leaves your skin feeling remarkably soft and your mind perfectly quiet. By the time you step back out into the hallway, you feel lighter. As I have since transitioned to full-time entrepreneurship, balancing all that comes with owning a business, I now view this salt room as the ultimate quiet luxury.
Sauna
Taking advantage of the sauna is another thing that I love. Honestly, when I have spa days, I have spa days! I lounge for hours and use all the amenities available as a part of my monthly recalibration. The Ritz-Carlton’s sauna is typical for the industry. The beauty comes in how you will feel after you leave. Sauna time is definitely a time to lock in on your mental toughness. The dry heat works to increase your circulation and mimic the heart-rate benefits of a light workout without moving a muscle. It’s the ultimate hack for detoxification. I typically stay for 10 minutes as masseuses recommend sitting in the sauna before your service so that your muscles are nice and relaxed.
Cooling Station
Outside the sauna is a dedicated cooling station directly outside, showcasing an intentional spa design. This setup allows for an immediate transition from intense heat to a rapid sensory refresh, which is essential for effective thermal cycling. That high-performance wellness practice involves alternating the body between extreme heat and rapid cooling to stimulate the circulatory and lymphatic systems. By moving from the dry heat of the sauna to the application of ice-cold towels, you trigger a process of vasodilation and vasoconstriction. This pumping action flushes out waste, reduces inflammation, and results in an immediate boost to both mental clarity and skin radiance. These are the primary reasons to engage with a luxury spa, and utilizing these amenities ensures you maximize every available health benefit.
Shower
If you think a shower is just a shower, this space will change your mind. It’s an immersive hydrotherapy suite tiled in stunning marble. As you can see from the photo, it isn't just a standard showerhead; it’s equipped with a series of wall-mounted body jets and a hand-held sprayer, all finished in polished gold.
The pressure from the multiple jets acts like a secondary massage, targeting muscle tension from every angle. It’s the ideal way to rinse off after the sauna or to remove the lingering massage oil. Mounted on the wall are toiletries of body wash, shampoo, and hair conditioner to help you unwind before heading home. I have not used this shower yet, but after writing this review and reminding myself how beautiful it is, I’m so ready to return just for the shower. ORDERING FOOD
To immerse yourself fully in the spa experience, ordering from the menu is a necessity. During my graduation staycation at The Ritz, I packed my own snacks and stored them in my locker to eat by the pool. While that was a practical choice, nothing compares to the luxury of being completely pampered. If you only indulge once, I highly recommend budgeting for an on-site meal to round out your spa day.
The menu offers a sophisticated variety, which is essential for a selective palate. I opted for a turkey sandwich with turkey bacon and fries, finished with a decadent cupcake. Every bite was divine, but the real luxury was the sheer convenience. There is something incredibly restorative about relaxing between your massage and your pool lounge without lifting a finger. Much like the spa services, ordering from the menu includes an automatic 20% gratuity. This is a standard Five-Star practice to keep in mind when reviewing the final tab. For the level of service and the overall value of the day, it is a small price to pay for total relaxation. HOW THE RITZ-CARLTON SPA, CHARLOTTE TREATS CELEBRATIONS
What I appreciate about the Ritz-Carlton Spa, Charlotte is how they celebrate with you. Each time that you call to book, they ask if you’re celebrating something. Honestly, with these times, I complete understand if you answer “yes” every single time. Making it to a new day is celebration alone. I’d always seen the attendants walking around with celebratory treats, but I thought it was an additional expense. The best part is that there isn’t an extra charge.
When I called to book a massage to celebrate my MBA graduation, they asked if I was celebrating anything and then I shared the occasion. They said, “congratulations,” and didn’t mention anything further. Fast forward to that spa visit, they recognized that achievement with the treat of chocolate covered strawberries. I do have food sensitivities, so once they brought out strawberries, I opted for a food that isn’t histamine releasing. Having tried their dessert before, I knew their red velvet cupcakes were tasty, and they obliged!
HOTEL AMENITIES ON THE 18TH FLOOR (HOT TUB, INDOOR POOL, GYM)
The 18th floor features amenities that are available to hotel guests, including their indoor pool and a hot tub with a beautiful view. You can see clearly out of the windows into the highest skyscrapers with professionals making their way through their workday. It doesn’t appear that they can see into the building. If they could, their eyes were definitely full because I showed off my curves while walking around the pool area, with pleasure!
Hot Tub
The hot tub’s location seems to be the angle where you can people watch the most, which is quite fun. Who knows if it is a “you can see them and they can’t see you” type of situation. Regardless, it’s okay to move with class and let people see how the Lord blessed you!
The square shape and intimate size of the hot tub only allow for a few people to fit in there, comfortably, at once. When going to the spa, I opt for a weekday as it is less crowded which means that I have more room to myself. The most packed that I have seen it is with three people in there at once, given its smaller size I’ll relax in the nearby pool chairs until folks’ head to a different section.
The pool lounge chairs opposite the hot tub, have their back facing the tub and towards the skyscrapers of downtown Charlotte. I’m not fond of having my back facing any area in public, but the adjustment period did not take too long. It is a safe area and I just continue to trust that God will guide my steps and keep me safe. To offset the sounds of people using the amenities, I put in my Sony LinkBuds Fit noise canceling headphones but keep them low so that I can be aware of my surroundings. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on my favorite television show or listen to an audiobook from the Libby app.
Indoor Pool
After your meal, the pool area provides the ultimate transition back to reality. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer a sweeping view of the Charlotte skyline, which is particularly striking as the sun begins to set. It is rare to find a space that feels both high-energy and remarkably peaceful. One a day when it’s less busy, like in the photo that I captured above, that is the true win.
The design details elevate the room beyond a standard hotel amenity. A lush, living green wall adds a vibrant organic touch to the modern interior, while the recessed lighting creates a warm, golden atmosphere. Whether you choose a cushioned lounge chair or a seated nook with city views, the environment encourages a slow, intentional pace. If you are someone who does not mind sleeping in public, those lounge chairs are the perfect place to fall asleep. Their comfortability had me dozing off to the point that I decided it was time to head on home.
Hotel Gym
I have tried working out after a massage in the past, and it was a definitive rookie mistake. If you are considering this gorgeous gym, your workout should most certainly occur before your scheduled service. I recommend adding a generous time buffer to your arrival to remain as calm as possible. Rushing through city traffic only to rush through a workout is the opposite of what your body needs to relax. While everything in this era feels urgent, taking time to nurture yourself must remain a priority. I highly suggest sticking to low-impact movements if you are there for a spa day. Adversely, if you are visiting on a single day pass, take full advantage of the high-intensity options.
This facility is a fitness lover’s dream. Located on the penthouse level, the gym shares the same panoramic views as the saline pool around the corner. The design features warm light-wood flooring and floor-to-ceiling mirrored walls. This creates a bright, spacious environment for a focused session. The equipment selection is impressive, featuring a dedicated line of treadmills positioned directly against the windows. For a low-impact warmup, the specialized cycle nook offers both high-performance spin bikes and ergonomic recumbent cycles. The strength floor is equally robust, equipped with the latest selectorized machines, a comprehensive free-weight zone, and a specialized rack for curl barbells. The Ritz-Carlton distinguishes itself through intentional details. The hydration station features a large glass dispenser for fruit-infused water and a dedicated towel-warming cabinet. These elevated amenities ensure the pre-treatment workout feels like an intrinsic part of the luxury journey. IS IT WORTH THE PRICE?
It is incredibly expensive. Whether you go multiple times or once a month to calm your nerves, you have to decide what fits into your budget. For a 90-minute Himalayan stone massage or a high-end facial, you are looking at a premium price point.
What I can speak to is the quality. My regular therapist always leaves my body feeling relaxed and the sessions go by slowly. The spa and hotel staff are professional and efficient, and that applies to the valet team as well. If you stay at the hotel overnight, you begin to build rapport with them and it feels like a safe check in with a friend making sure that you return to your destination safely. If you appreciate the prestige of a downtown landmark and the glow of a city skyline, this is your destination. It is the ultimate urban escape for those who want to be near the center of everything while experiencing a level of Five-Star isolation that is worth every cent of the investment. Treat yourself!
