There comes a point in your life when your growth is inevitable. Even if the leap that you’re about to take may seem scary, you know the pain of staying the same is the scariest option. That’s where I was with my former ad network in Google AdSense. Don’t get me wrong, AdSense is a great option for beginners and it served me very well when I was running as a blog. I launched this site in January 2020, after months of brainstorming the year prior and have written about its first year’s expenses, here. What I’m most excited to speak to now is revenue generation as this year, I transitioned to full-time entrepreneurship. If that shake-up wasn’t bold enough, now that I operate as a publisher, I decided to switch my ad partner to Journey by Mediavine and began that process in January 2026. I’ve been using it for several months now and am excited to share an authentic program overview and review.
I am a very observant person. After launching this site, I became a sponge for knowledge and nearly every time I visited a site, I would observe its ad partners to see what they were doing to maximize revenue. www.somotiffated.com started as my passion project the month before the coronavirus made its way to the U.S. and shut everything down. I’m looking at you, quarantine. As I worked full-time in local government, my priority was for it to be a hobby, but I didn’t want to leave money on the table. That was when blogs were incredibly popular, prior to the rise of TikTok and YouTube stars, as you have to remember that the creator economy surged when we were at home and views of traditional employment really began to shift.

I used all my resources to find the best option for me. I even reached out to a popular blogger/influencer when she had a Q&A session in her Instagram stories for Ask Me Anything. I enjoyed reading her blog posts, but noticed she didn’t have ads, so I asked if they were on the horizon. She shared that she’s had offers, but chose to miss out on $10K+, monthly, because she wanted control of her messaging to her audience. I respected that response as brand integrity is a key component of running any business.

My research was vast and in looking at a lot of the lifestyle and fashion magazines, their ads were professional and respectful, as you can include ad permissions. I see having an ad network partner as not only a layer of prestige, but something that you should include from the beginning to get your audience accustomed to that user experience. For the longest time, the ad networks I preferred had such out of touch goals that I just bucketed as a long-term goal achievement.
While Google AdSense does not have a minimum traffic requirement, prior to 2026, higher tier ad networks had astronomical monthly threshold requirements with Mediavine’s being 50,000 sessions and Raptive’s being 100,000 views.

Now, in 2026, many companies are realizing they were missing out on a lot of revenue by creating traffic requirements that had a steep barrier for eligibility, pushing out beginners. Even Mediavine’s Journey was culpable as though they launched in 2024, their eligibility requirement through 2025 was 10,000 monthly sessions.

As someone who has earned three college degrees and went to college for 8.5 years in total, I’m all for setting goals high and achieving them through hard work and dedication. We all know the saying that if it were easy, anyone could do it, so I get why they have premium requirements for their premium product. I’m more so just flabbergasted at the world of content these days with so many companies setting requirements for 10,000 followers, visitors, subscribers, views, sessions, etc. Having that amount of eyeballs on any one creator’s brand is steep.

From my observation, having a highly engaged community is valuable and often times is more noticeable with smaller audiences because they feel a tighter connection to the creator. Major shout out to Mediavine’s Journey for fundamentally changing that dynamic by creating a bridge ad network. By acting as a dedicated technical bridge for growing sites, its lower entry threshold of 1,000 monthly sessions, allows publishers to maintain an ad infrastructure that mirrors major corporate lifestyle magazines with increased revenue share.

JOURNEY BY MEDIAVINE QUALIFICATIONS AND THE GROW PREREQUISITE

Time to pull back the curtain on how Journey by Mediavine actually evaluates your website. Whether this is the first ad network that you’re applying to or you are making the shift from Google AdSense, it is an intricate process. Having utilized Google AdSense for five years, and applying during a time when everyone pivoted to content creation, my only delay in that process was Google’s bandwidth for review, as I applied in September and was approved in November 2020.

Mediavine’s Journey program operates very differently. When I applied in January, I had 10.2K users visiting my site the month prior in December 2025, so I was ecstatic knowing that I could have qualified with their former high threshold. I was big on starting strong out the gate at the top of the year, so I waited to start the process until that time.

The good news is that you don’t have to wait until you’re eligible to apply, keep reading to find out why!

7 MAIN CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION

1) Original, Brand Safe Content: Content creation is very much a form of entrepreneurship. While you are your own boss, when participating in these programs you have to color within the lines. I have been consistently amazed by the quality of ads Mediavine populates on my site, from global icons like Disney and Starbucks to even some of my own former employers. Creating original content is the main thing. Ensure that what you’re writing and sharing is your own. It must be authentic work that is high quality. Having pride in your work and keeping it classy is the best thing you can do for site approval. In 2020, Mediavine published a blog post about keyword anti-targeting, explaining how certain words and content can prevent family-friendly brands from advertising on a site. Surely, your site is promoting positivity so that won’t be an issue. Just be sure to familiarize yourself with their blocked words.

2) Traffic Geography: Your audience’s location matters more than you think. While they don’t explicitly list Tier 1 advertising markets as a traffic requirement, Journey by Mediavine does share that the United States of America has the highest rate of monetization. They don’t require a certain amount of viewership from the U.S. – think premium ad market – but they do indicate that having a good amount of premium traffic ensures your site is appealing to advertisers. As a U.S. based publisher with global traffic, I can definitely attest to this portion. My writing is very SEO (Search Engine Optimization) friendly, so readers from all countries find my work. I do feel as if Tier 1 markets like the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia are monetized higher.

3) Audience Engagement: Journey by Mediavine approves sites that have an engaged audience from publishers who write from their unique perspective with knowledge. In this blog post, they shared more best practices for websites monetized through their program. As noted above, they review traffic geography, but they also focus on audience engagement and its measurement through review of your traffic sources. Those that monetize are the ones gained through Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in Google, Pinterest, Facebook. Managing ownership of your audience through an e-newsletter brings in email traffic which they value as well.

4) Consistent Content: Their advertisers need your content to advance their brand’s reach. This piggybacks on the audience engagement criteria as when you post consistently, you have a greater chance of reaching new and returning readers. Interestingly enough, Journey by Mediavine wants you to post at a regular and healthy rate. They mentioned that posting too often can be a sure tell of your posting content that isn’t original as they aren’t fond of crowdsourced content.

5) 4-Month Domain Maturity: Longevity is something that you will need to have as you’ll need to have a site domain that is at least four months old. Given that premium programmatic advertising relies on real-time bidding from global, prestigious brands, those corporate partners want to see a baseline of historical site stability before they spend to advertise on your website.

6) 1,000 Session Traffic Threshold: Yes! Their barrier to entry officially dropped from 10,000 monthly sessions to 1,000 monthly sessions of which your data will be verified via a 30-day period. This is major for newer sites with a growing community that want to monetize earlier in their entrepreneurship journey. Back in the day, Google AdSense was really all that was available, so it’s definitely something to be sure to use to your advantage.

7) 30-Day Grow Mandate: This is a step that is like a shock to your system if you’re not into the weeds of what the application entails. Especially in this day and age, when so many things seem based on instant gratification. Mediavine uses the platform Grow, which is a plugin where you’ll have to create an account. Keep in mind, you will need to have Google Analytics tracking installed on your website prior to applying.

This integration is a mandatory step in the Journey by Mediavine onboarding process, allowing the platform to verify traffic analytics and ensure site eligibility. Once you install Grow, and give it access to your Google Analytics, it tracks your site’s traffic in the background for a full 30 days. Past that point, whenever your traffic meets their threshold, you’ve checked off that requirement! As I mentioned earlier, you don’t have to wait until you’re eligible to apply. Once grow is installed and you check off all criteria, they’ll let you know that you’re good!

Bidding Technology Static / Single Provider Advanced Machine Learning Continuous Premium Optimization
Publisher Revenue Share Variable / Low Baseline 70% Base Split 75% Base Split

THE REALITY OF THE RAMP-UP FOR A SELF-SERVICE AD PARTNER

The technical integration of Journey is completely automated. Because it is a self-service model designed for lean operations, you do not have a dedicated account manager tweaking your dashboard settings. The script is built to protect Core Web Vitals automatically, which essential means they are working to protect your user experience (UX), and in turn limiting your manual control over ad placements to ensure your site speed and UX do not degrade.
Onboarding
Honestly, I wasn’t mentally prepared for this step. Given that I was formerly a branding professional for a global Fortune 500 company’s enterprise communication team, I know how to maneuver through change management. However, when it’s your own company that is being tested and the changing variable is your income, it’s hard to watch your money take such a deep dip during the period when Journey is learning your site and its traffic patterns.

I do still believe that I made the transition to apply, at the right time, as I applied on January 2, and was approved on February 3. So, true to their guidelines, they did crawl my site for 30-days to ensure that I met their criteria. I made the decision to get onboarding that same day and began the administrative task. The leg work took a lot of energy. I use Weebly as my CMS (Content Management System), so I had to scrape all the Google AdSense drag-and-drop options and then find the hidden code that referenced Google Analytics as well, before the Grow plugin would approve incorporating Journey by Mediavine ads on my site.

The biggest difference in transitioning from a platform like Google AdSense to Journey that frequently triggers an immediate sense of friction for site publishers is the ramp-up once the ads are actually running on your website. With traditional networks, standard click-based tracking pays out basic amounts instantly. Journey relies on a complex machine learning model that must map your specific layout, analyze reader scroll depth, and establish an active bidding history with external ad exchanges.

This creates a mandatory window that lasts between 30 to 60 days when they’re basically courting your data to learn what type of content you share and which companies will bid for ad space on your publication. In the first week, daily revenue figures can drop to disappointing double-digit cents. To be real, there was a day when I checked and saw a day’s work amounted to .88¢ and it got me hot. I went into overdrive planning my content calendar for the future.

At that moment, I had to incorporate breathing techniques from yoga, because what in the world. After I calmed down, I made the conscious decision to stick with Journey. Mainly because it was too much of a hassle with my CMS to turn back to Google AdSense, but I also knew that Journey was a step up even in it didn’t feel like it in that moment. Reframing the frustration made me remember that it’s better to view that initial disappointment as a launch process and not an instant payout. Rather, it’s a long-term data investment and I want to see it through to the official Mediavine tier. Once the algorithm mapped audience behavior patterns, the RPM (Revenue Per Mille) standardizes, is when the real growth happens with earnings often reaching double or triple that of entry-level programmatic tools.
Understanding Your Journey by Mediavine's Grow Dashboard
A screenshot of a brand-new Mediavine Journey publisher dashboard showing a clean slate with zeroed-out metrics. A dark blue welcome banner at the top reads

When you log into your Journey dashboard, you are looking at the digital heartbeat of your publication's earning power. The picture shown at the start of this section is your Grow dashboard, which is updated daily at 10a EST. The plus is that you also get access to Mediavine’s more detailed dashboard, which operates on a one-day delay.

Mediavine doesn't just hand you a random flat rate; your revenue is calculated continuously by a live, programmatic auction tracking exactly how your audience engages with your verticals. To understand exactly how your payment is determined, you have to look at how the six core metrics on your screen speak to one another:

  • Earning Total: This is your net take-home revenue for the specific date range you have selected. It represents your clean 70% share of the total programmatic advertising spend generated from your site after the real-time bidding rounds close. Be advised, they pay on a Net65 schedule. So, your earnings from February will be paid on May 5th, assuming you hit the standard $100 payout threshold. This 65-day buffer from the end of the earning month allows Mediavine to collect revenue from their global advertising exchanges, protect the network against delinquent corporate ad spend, and guarantee that your deposit clears securely without passing downstream market risks onto your business operations.

  • RPM (Revenue Per Mille): This is the holy grail metric for digital publishers. Mille is Latin for a thousand, and Mediavine specifically calculates this as your Session RPM. The math looks like this: Session RPM = (Estimated Earnings / Total Sessions) × 1,000

  • CPM (Cost Per Mille): While RPM measures what you earn, CPM measures what the advertiser pays per 1,000 views of an individual ad unit. If luxury fashion or beauty brands are aggressively bidding to reach your community, your CPM climbs. High CPMs are the building blocks that drive your total earnings upward.

  • Impressions: This counts the raw number of times an individual ad was successfully served and seen on your site. Because a single page on a lifestyle magazine might hold multiple ad placements as a user scrolls down, your total impressions will always be significantly higher than your traffic numbers.

  • Sessions vs. Page Views: Your dashboard tracks both, but they represent two different things. A Session is the holistic view of a single user's entire visit to your site within a specific timeframe, regardless of how many links they click. Page Views track every single individual page refresh or click that happens during those visits. Mediavine intentionally anchors your calculations to Sessions rather than Page Views because it rewards publishers who build deep reader engagement and stellar user experiences. These are both tracked via Google Analytics (GA4), and then Mediavine uses that data to update your daily dashboard in Grow.
Ad Placement & Learning To Give Up Control
When they say Journey by Mediavine is really a self-service option, they mean that in full. Google AdSense was also self-service as during the pandemic when I onboarded, I had a question about the process, tracked down a Google Ads number, and the representative told me that they were separate operations and hung up on me. Journey’s process isn’t to that extreme because there isn’t a phone number to call, but when you reach out to their support email address, they respond from an automated email address and include “Journey does not offer one-to-one email support except for Site Sales, Rebrands, or Separations.”

Further in the email it says, “For general troubleshooting, questions, or performance insights, we encourage Journey publishers to use the Help Center first. If you still need help, please visit the Journey Community Space to search for answers from other publishers or post your own question.”

For someone who has built my site from scratch, it’s a tough thing to give up control to an ad partner where you can’t get one-on-one support. Initially, my in-content ads fired but really slow and then they stopped. At the time, I didn’t realize how hands off it was and wanted to control the ad placement on my site, which you can do with official Mediavine, so I included manual ad placements. I just stayed patient hoping that they would fire and even formulated escape plan to apply to another ad partner once my qualifying traffic sparked. Then, I realized patience needed action and revisited communications and found the Journey Community Space, which allowed me to post publicly for support.

That in itself was outside my comfort zone, but I did it anyway. After I didn’t see it posted publicly, I found a Submit a Request button that allowed me to get my site recrawled through a private chat with a customer service representative. After being told the manual ad placements that Mediavine uses don’t work for Journey, I removed them and then requested my site be recrawled and then my in-content ads began to fire and looked great!

They seem to have certain customer service representative for site accounts as the two times that I submitted a request; I saw the photo of the same employee providing my response. The customer service support that I received was curt. I’m hoping that when I meet the traffic requirements for the official Mediavine tier that working directly with an account manager with make for smoother operations. So, just keep in mind that when you’re on the Journey path, you’re not fully on your own, but the support given will be basic.
In-Content Ads

Currently, I have my ad fill on high, which I recently kicked up from the optimal setting. I’m working very hard to push towards the official Mediavine requirements, which are now based on revenue instead of site sessions. Because I take my brand integrity so seriously, the work that I produce takes a good while. So, this ensure that I’m still getting paid as I publish at a good pace. I’ve ads on my site for so long that my audience is accustomed to this user experience.

I don’t always love where the ads are placed, but with my CMS being Weebly, I really just have to deal with it until I earn enough revenue to switch to Mediavine, where I’ll get a dedicated representative to support my account.
Sticky Adhesion Ads

Video Player Ads

These ads are fun to watch appear on my site and they refresh constantly, making it fun to view video advertisements from high-quality brands. This appears right above footer’s sticky adhesion banner ad. This player ad does have a closeout option, such as the ‘x’ that you see in the upper left-hand corner. If it ever stacks above text in a manner that blocks what a reader wants to see, they have the ability to close it out. Personally, I leave this ad option here because I enjoy looking at them. I love that it’s truly readers choice as to whether they enjoy it too.
Event Driven Ads

Photo: Tiffany Johnson / So MoTiFFated
The event driven ads are the ones that I enabled lastly on my site. I’d noticed them when I was looking at global news sites and found them to be cool. While some folks may find pop-up ads annoying, the rate at which Journey by Mediavine does them is so classy, that I never had that issue. Essentially, these are behavioral ads that Mediavine’s technology brings to the forefront when you’re taking a pause from scrolling, or shortly after you’ve clicked to a new page. Some of the ads I’ve seen lately catch my attention even if I don’t consume products from certain brands. I.e., I’m not a coffee drinker, but I love seeing the excitement from the young lady in the above Starbucks ad about a Frappuccino.
Sidebar Ads
They also have sidebar ads that populate as well. I know they are present on my site, because they are included in my revenue report, however I have yet to see them myself. Hence, there not being a photo example included.

THE FINANCIAL UPSIDE OVER TIME

An infographic by Mediavine titled
Photo: Screenshot of mediavine.com
I know from experience that sticking with your goal can have extreme benefits. While it was rough missing out on two months of in-content income, the future is looking bright now. Unlike other ad partners, Mediavine really does reward loyalty and this year they released their revamped programs. As you can see from their graphic above, sticking within their ecosystem, beginning with Journey, is a broader business plan with long-term financial payoff.

Publishers on Journey operate at a 70% revenue split. While that number looks incredibly close to the 68% take-home share you get with introductory networks like Google AdSense, the actual payout is vastly different. Because Journey plugs your site into a premium, real-time programmatic auction where elite global brands actively compete for your layout space, that 70% is being applied to a much larger and more lucrative revenue pie. However, the moment your site hits $5,000 in annual ad revenue, the platform triggers an automatic upgrade to the Mediavine’s “Official" tier. This graduation instantly unlocks a pay raise of 5%, because that tier pays out a 75% base revenue share split. The higher revenue goals that your site reaches, there is more opportunity for you to gain increased revenue sharing as they max out at 90% for the “Premiere Plus” tier. Good things come to those who wait and work!

WHY JOURNEY BY MEDIAVINE IS A GREAT AD PARTNER OPTION

Having made the switch from blogging as a hobby to running my site as a part of my full-time business, this is a major step up in quality and user experience.

Here are the reasons why I appreciate this program:

1) Auto Ad Placement: I take my work very seriously and am used to having so much control in every aspect of this site. As Weebly is my CMS, they have a drag and drop feature where I could place my in-content ads for Google AdSense. That isn’t the case with Journey by Mediavine. While giving up control isn’t always easy, I do find value in their auto placed ads. I view it as a scavenger hunt of where they will be as their placement usually shifts with each visit. Until I reach official Mediavine, I’m fine with giving up control so that I can use my energy elsewhere.

2) Higher Pay: While the beginning stages of the ramp up are rough, and may or may not have led me to an emotional meltdown or two, once they are done with the two-month analysis period where they learn your site for their ad partners, they payoff is real. I’ve seen my RPM’s spike as high as $267. With AdSense, my highest RPM was $25. That’s a major difference!

3) Enhanced UI: I take pride in knowing that my independent site has the same high-quality ads that national publications do as I often see the Kargo logo on my site’s ads. Kargo is a top digital advertising platform that has partnerships with major companies, including the NY Post. The enhanced user interface makes it look professional and that creates for a better user experience, too. I applied for ads as soon as I was eligible, so my audience is accustomed to this standard of journalism.

4) Growth Rewards & Loyalty Incentives: As a talented, educated, outspoken Black woman, I have often been in former jobs where I was undervalued and wasn’t paid for what I contributed. Entrepreneurship has freed me from those constraints and I’m so enthused by their publisher programs that allow publishers to gain increased revenue share for traffic milestones, all the way up to 90% revenue share in favor of you!

It’s such a beautiful opportunity. My content is evergreen, meaning that it’s favored by search engines and has staying power that remains fascinating for my audience well past the moment I hit publish. To know that in the coming years, I’ll gain increase revenue from years past makes me excited to continue this journey of entrepreneurship.
