Starting a book club has been on my mind for some time now. Last June, I created a book review, or my ten takeaways of a book that I read, and nothing has since come of that category. I thought about it and I don't want to just read books and tell people my thoughts, or what I feel like are important excerpts to me. Ideally, I'd love to create a community where we can read and grow our knowledge together, have diversity of thought, and intellectual discourse in a safe space. Thus, MoTiFFated Minds Book Club is here and reading will begin on Wednesday, July 1, 2020! It's a virtual book club.
We're at the beginning of June 2020, and still in the middle of COVID-19 and continuing the fight against longstanding racial injustice, so I wanted to allow folks time to receive the book if ordering it offline. So far, I haven't seen anyone my age, or anyone in my hometown of Charlotte create an environment to help people learn and lead in this way, and I hope it will be something special for my community and beyond.
First up on the reading list will be The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. If you have visited my About Page of this blog, then you'll know this book is a special one. As the only leisure book that I read in college, it spoke to my soul in a different way. I first head about this book in an interview that Oprah did with Pharrell, and he praised the book as being life changing. The fictional book follows a boy on his journey to reach his personal legend, and reminds us of the trials and tribulations that come with pursuing your destiny.
"No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally he doesn't know it."
We are in a space where people are beginning to learn of which side of history they will fall and the power of their voice. While the novel is fiction, it is so very relatable and has many quotes that can be pulled to apply to our own lives. It can help to provide the juice you need to fulfill your destiny, which is much needed especially during this time.
The first virtual meet up is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, July 12, 2020, and you can sign up to join my free virtual book club in the form below. Those that sign-up will receive more details via email.
It's free to join the book club, though you will need to obtain the book on your own. Feel free to access your local public library system to check out the book as some have options to rent e-books.
If you prefer to purchase from black owned bookstores, I found a list of vendors through articles titled, Black Owned Online Bookstores That You Should Know & You can order today from these black-owned independent bookstores.

In case you're in love with the content of the pages in the picture at the beginning of this blog post, that text is from the book Destiny: Step Into Your Purpose by T.D. Jakes. It's also an amazing read, and may be on the book club list in the future.
