Is peach the official scent of spring and summer? As a kid, I grew up loving peach year-round, whether it was peaches and cream flavored oatmeal or a cup of syrupy peaches. They were my favorite fruit that I forgot I loved as time passed. Now, I see them promoted everywhere this time of year, even as it relates to perfume.
I have always joked that I aspired to be bougie and now that it is my reality, I am still so shocked by the price of products on the market. I have expensive taste and the more that I study perfumery, the more expensive perfumes grasp my attention because of their level of intricacy. While $405 is expensive for any item, whether it be a bottle of perfume, a car note, or a grocery bill, it is important to ask yourself if it fills a need you want filled. In 2020, during the pandemic, I became infatuated with finding my joy and a lot of that came from aromatherapy. That is when I started seeing the hype about Tom Ford’s Bitter Peach.
I was oblivious to Tom Ford's existence until my college years at North Carolina State University when Jay-Z's hit song, Tom Ford, was new and it was played at all football tailgates. Even then, after the hype of that album died down, I forgot about the designer. I like nice products, regardless of the brand making them, but I continued to see the Tom Ford brand in Sephora with new products and he finally got me. Last month, I purchased Figue Érotique by Tom Ford and here I am contemplating another.

If you have ever seen the television show, Change of Heart, that is how I felt about this perfume. If you haven’t, go ahead and do yourself a favor and catch up on some mindless 90s television. When I sprayed it on a scent stick while browsing in Sephora last year, my immediate reaction was no, thank you. That is why scent chemistry is so important. How it smells on one person does not always correlate to how it will smell on you. That is why it is necessary to see how things mesh with your skin.

Most recently, I was outside doing garden work when a scent fairy gifted me with samples of Bitter Peach. I immediately sprayed it on my skin to see if it was anything like I remembered. Thank goodness it wasn't. The way that it meshed with my skin made me feel great and gave me a more positive perspective on the perfume. I don’t mind liking things that are hyped up. It could be overhyped or underhyped, I just need to like things because I like them and not because it is the trend of the moment.

I am wearing it now as I write this review and it is the most eloquent peach perfume that I have ever worn. Granted, I don't wear them often. I mentioned my love for the fruit was mostly restricted to eating, but smelling like a snack is what I am here for as well. Bath & Body Works' Peach Blossom & Nectar, their collaboration with Vera Bradley, was my intro to a fun peach scent for the season. Although I reviewed it in May, I purchased it during this summer's semi-annual sale. While that is a playful option, Bitter Peach is serious business. I am grown and want to smell like a sophisticated woman who has edge and states her boundaries while still being sweet, and Tom Ford gets me there.

Despite it having bitter in its name, it does have an element of sweetness. As I completed my yard work, those mosquitoes started attacking me more viciously than before. I know I am thick-a-licious and all, but the sweetness from the fragrance turned those mosquitoes on too much. It probably would have been best to spray my samples after I finished working in my garden, but I couldn't resist. This isn’t the measuring stick of whether you should purchase or not, but it happened and I can share it with joy instead of the pain from the mosquito bites.

Moving on to human reaction, not only did people catch my drift, they were mesmerized when I let them smell my sample. I mean completely stunned that a fragrance could smell so good, different, and pleasing against the body's scent chemistry. I actually gave one away to someone that always adds to my joy, and her immediate reaction of excitement and gratitude made it worth parting ways with that sample. I have a few more of them and best believe those are just for me. This scent is one that requires self-prioritization because of how great it smells. It was concocted with luxury in mind.

THE FRAGRANCE BREAKDOWN

  •  Fragrance Family: Warm, Woody Nectar
  • Key Notes: Top: Pêche De Vigne Accord, Blood Orange Oil; Middle: Davana Oil; Base: Patchouli Oil (Indonesia), Sandalwood Oil (New Caledonia), Labdanum Absolute
When this scent hits my nostrils, my mind immediately goes to unique eloquence. Instantly, I smell patchouli and peaches. I know perfume has its notes, with the top being what you are supposed to smell initially, but I have to be honest about what my nose perceives first. As someone who likes spicy scents with wood notes like sandalwood, Bitter Peach really pushes the boundaries of what I gravitate towards when it comes to fruit fragrances. The addition of blood orange is the perfect pairing, as that is known as a note that has zesty bitterness and goes superbly with patchouli. The real magic happens in the middle, where Davana oil introduces a boozy, wine-like richness that stops the peach from becoming sweet or juvenile. Instead, it grounds the fruit, leading beautifully into a base anchored by Labdanum absolute. This sticky, resinous material adds a leathery, amber-like warmth that makes the Indonesian patchouli and New Caledonian sandalwood feel incredibly deep.

WEARABILITY MAKES IT WORTH THE PRICE

For a perfume bottle to be this steep in price, it is great to know the Tom Ford team did their research and executed well. It has officially earned a spot on my wish list as a certified MoTiFFated Must-Have.

If you are looking for a fruit fragrance that trades youthful playfulness for a rich complexity that is grown and spicy, then Bitter Peach is well worth the investment. Having owned another masterpiece out of this fragrance house, Figue Érotique, I know firsthand how a Tom Ford scent can hold you captive. It offers impressive staying power that delivers a consistent serotonin boost with every single spray. While Figue Érotique leans into an uninhibited, sugary-sweet warmth, Bitter Peach is sultrier, beautifully serving its purpose as a deep and desirable scent. It is a fragrance that will linger on your skin all night, acting as the ultimate wingman for your next night out on the town. If you approach this perfume with an open mind for the fruity and seductive, you will not be disappointed.

Does your current fragrance collection have room for a scent as complex as Bitter Peach, or are you still searching for your signature summer warm-up?
