The internet got me again! I keep trying to mind my business, and since operating this site full-time is my business, I am in a season where this millennial is doing her best to keep up with the brands. Sol de Janeiro has been one of the hottest names on the market for a while now, and I will admit that I was late to the party. But, for good reason. Back in late 2023, one of their body butters went viral for all the wrong reasons. The internet jokingly called it spider gate, and from that moment on, my association with the brand carried a sense of caution. As time passed, it became clear that the entire situation was more myth than reality. It was a domino effect sparked by a single review and amplified by the algorithm. So here I am with fresh eyes and a clean slate, finally giving this brand a fair chance to earn my trust.
Having always been intrigued by advertisements and the messages they send, I pay close attention to how brands choose to show up. One of my first college papers at NCSU focused on representation in marketing and the quiet harm to self-esteem that comes from being left out of the frame consistently. Lack of visibility sends a subconscious signal to the people omitted, as if they are not worthy of inclusion. Fortunately, I never accepted that lie. Through this platform, I continue to call it out whenever it becomes noticeable.

As I became aware of the new release in-store, pointed out to me by one of my favorite retail associates, I realized I was not too familiar with the digital marketing behind Sol de Janeiro. After reviewing the scents in person and then shifting to their online presence, their messaging caught my attention in the best way. As I scrolled through their Instagram, I found myself pleasantly surprised by the beautiful range of skin tones and body types featured throughout the campaign. The brand leaned into color, joy, and movement, and it felt intentional rather than performative. It makes sense that they have seen a noticeable rise in social mentions this season, because people respond to marketing that reflects the world.

Sol de Janeiro sits in an interesting place within the fragrance landscape. It is not drugstore luxury, yet it remains more accessible than the designer houses. It occupies a sweet spot for consumers who want a little indulgence without stepping into prestige pricing. Their scents lean playful, edible, and memory-driven, and how you choose to wear them is your business. Maybe they will get you excited enough to create a memory of all three factors on your next date. I am not here to analyze your lifestyle choices. We are grown.

The bright colors in this Destination Drop collection immediately provided serotonin for me. If you are a regular So MoTiFFated reader, then you know I am on a mission to live life in color. These scents added to my vanity would definitely support that mission, but before giving them the gift of my vanity, I gave them the gift of my coverage by bringing their analysis to you. They are listed in the order of my affinity for them.

Its beautiful soft pink colors remind me of my wardrobe as a child. I stayed decked out in the blushest of pinks, and that set the tone for me being a girly girl. That could be the reason Cheeky Biquíni reminded me of Carolina Herrera’s Good Girl Blush. While I own the original, I heavily covered Bath & Body Works’ retired similar dupe, You’re Cheeky, last year. What led me to that analogy is its soft but powerful presence.

Their in-store marketing highlights apricot nectar and sheer vanilla, both of which captured my attention right away. Though the notes are more layered than the display suggests, what you need to know is that it gives you princess energy.

REFRESCO PARAÍSO

Refresco Paraíso might have done something special with its formula. At first sniff, it smelled very spring-like, and the in-store display highlighted rainforest orchid and sea breeze, so that is where my nose went to form its creative description. In totality, its scent profile takes you deeper into the jungle, leaves included. Had I known that, I would have metaphorically packed my Everything But Water swimsuit and hopped on a flight back to Puerto Rico, where I thoroughly enjoyed climbing the mountain of El Yunque in San Juan.
That is the vibe it gives: an excursion-filled vacation that allows for different moods to take place. While it starts off floral and earthy, its dry down becomes sweeter. I enjoyed this because body mist because it ignited multiple creative visuals. In addition to thinking of the fresh spring water that greeted me after sliding down the waterfall in El Yunque, its sea breeze essence also reminded me of a seahorse. Those fun images of seahorses on the books that were made purposely for bath time. Plus, the unforgettable image of SpongeBob SquarePants riding on his notable seahorse with his hair in the wind.

Whether you grab this body mist to metaphorically transport you to a vacation to get through the craziness of the day to day, you use it for nostalgia, or you pack it in your bag on your physical vacation, you should be pleased.

My affinity toward lemon body care items sways drastically. I love lemon pound cake and lemonade. There is nothing like a clean kitchen with a lemon candle burning in the background. Some days, I am in love with a citrusy scent that leans lemon, as I am a fan of Devotion by Dolce & Gabbana. Other days, those scents smell artificial to me. Knowing that I am wishy-washy with this type of scent, keep that in mind when reading my take.

Limonada Gelada is definitely lemon through and through, with Sol de Janeiro highlighting lemonade accord and coconut milk on its in-store display. That combination is new to my senses and sent my face into a frown as if I had just eaten a Lemonhead candy. However, hope arrived on the dry down. While the lemon still overpowered the coconut milk, the combination shifted to a creamy gourmand that I tolerated better. It did not make me feel like a warm slice of lemon pound cake with hints of brown sugar and vanilla drizzle, but it did not make me feel like I was washing dishes with lemon-scented detergent either. A win is a win.

TIFFANY’S TAKE

As I scent tested these in-store, another of my favorite retail associates smelled them for the first time. Her ranking was the same as mine, though another associate ranked Lemon Gelada first. What you prefer to smell like will always be based on your preference. The beautiful thing about this collection is that it gives you enough options to hopefully find the one you like, especially if you are looking for a brand that offers prestige without the prestige price point. Each mist is priced at $26. It is a fun and playful option for this season, many of which can be layered together to make you smell like a tasty treat.

Just make sure you are moisturized so the body mist sinks into your skin for longer wear. Also, spray the body mist. Do not play with it and think it is like perfume where you can give it three pumps on your wrist and be set for the day. It is not that type of party with these products. Give yourself at least fifteen sprays and get it all over your skin and your clothes.

You will thank me later, but for now, your readership is thanks enough! Go smell great!
