Let’s talk scalp! I’m certain that a healthy scalp starts with healthy hydration. When I’m doing the most a.k.a. not taking time to slow down and nourish my body, I notice that my scalp is one of the first things to suffer. I get itchy, dry scalp, and a scalp sore is known to pop up here and there. One time, it got so intense that I went to the dermatologist. The consensus? That I needed to stay hydrated inside and out. In my experience, I’ve noticed that sometimes there is not anything wrong that requires a diagnosis. Sometimes it is simply that I need to take time to slow down and take better care of myself. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely go to the doctor regularly, but beyond that I’ve learned to take a chill pill. If you needed a reminder to incorporate better self-care into your routine, you just received a gem for free!

I have been doing that all 2025 and thank God! Some of those self-care activities have been noted on my blog through reviews such as The Spa at Ballantyne in Charlotte, NC (Ballantyne Hotel) or Do Cécred Edge Drops Really Work? My 16-Week Journey Will Be The Judge!, the latter is a self-imposed challenge to grow these edges back in full! Taking care of my hair is a vital part of that journey. Being a Black woman with natural 4c low-porosity hair is so fulfilling, but it takes a lot of effort to keep it maintained. Having this hair type means that it struggles to absorb moisture, because product wants to sit atop my hair without soaking into the hair strand. Now, my game plan for my hair is to keep it moisture locked in by any means necessary!

Let's Talk Price

$29? That price seems so steep for the Pattern Beauty Scalp Serum! Did I pay full price? Nope. Not at all. I’m an independent blogger, who does not yet receive sponsored products to review, so I waited until Ulta Beauty had a Buy One, Get One 50% Off sale. So, it was $14.50 but that still seems like a costly price.

For that price, Jesus himself must’ve helped to formulate this product because it better create a miracle. Which key ingredients are included in this serum to justify its price point? I researched that part to save you time!

Targeting the Scalp

This product is easy to use because its applicator is simple! As you can see from the photo above, it has a nozzle that you can use in multiple ways. Whether your hair is parted in braids, locks, twists, or if you just want to place the nozzle in between your natural hair without a set strategy to attack the target areas. It’s a process that takes a couple minutes, maximum, and it always feels great to be followed up with a soft scalp massage.

The Ingredients That Make It Work

Water/Aqua
This serum is water-based. It doesn’t feel oily, but it does feel jelly like. I recently learned that the first ingredient listed under cosmetic products make up the primary portion of its ingredients. So, that’s a definitive help in supporting moisture!

Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil

The cooling sensation pops out at me! Pattern’s marketing claims that it’s tingly, but it doesn’t seem like that to me. It’s a cooling soothing sensation that I thoroughly enjoy. I don’t know if you ever used Dr. Miracle’s hair grease back in the day, but that sucker was tingly! It must have built up my tolerance for it because Pattern’s Scalp Serum feels like a Girl Scouts’ Thin Mint for my hair. I used to work for Girl Scouts, so that comparison popped right into my head. Hopefully that analogy didn’t go over your head! Peppermint is great to ease the itchiness that comes from dry scalp, while helping to get your blood flow going to promote hair growth.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice

This ingredient is the silent helper. Prior to getting involved with caring more for my hair, I never really thought of aloe vera as anything other than what adds comfort to a burn or an ingredient that I love in my hand sanitizer. Regarding the latter, when given the opportunity that is my preference because it provides a layer of relaxation that is very much appreciated. That’s why its leaf juice in this scalp serum is great, it calms inflammation, moisturizes, and mitigates discomfort.

Rosmarinus (Rosemary) Leaf Oil

Rosemary oil keeps becoming more prevalent in hair products, seemingly by the day. It’s another great ingredient to stimulate the blood flow and leaves your nervous system grateful. That effect allows for your hair to grow at a faster pace while adding strength to your hair’s fiber. Given that it’s an astringent, it keeps the hair’s oil production in check so it’s not working overtime. Gone are the days when rosemary is only synonymous with an herb placed in your pot roast or chicken dinner!

Lavandula (Lavender) Oil

They had me sold at lavender! I’m down for lavender anything, I even drink it in my tea. It’s just such a relaxing leaf that provides so much comfort in so many ways. So, when I saw it in this ingredient list, I knew that it would do my scalp good. Not only does it calm the scalp, but it reduces redness too. Fun fact about lavender, it’s also an antimicrobial so it’s there to ward off any little bacteria that you might not even know is there. Although, this product is for the scalp I have used it on the hair as well when doing my twist out and it adds an extra level of shine and is a great binder with my twist out creams.

Tiffany's Take: Did It Help My Hair?

Yes! I’ve noticed that it absorbs quickly in my hair and my scalp doesn’t itch as much. Sometimes I use it daily and other times its rotated in my hair care routine because I’ll probably never give up using hair grease. Regarding hair growth, it’s hard to pinpoint if it’s a vital factor in that department because I’ve renovated my entire hair care regimen, including more wash days with deep conditioners and treatment masks.

I love using it in my hair when I have twists or Bantu knots, because it’s easy to use directly on my scalp without worry that its water-based solution will cause my tight curls to shrink. The final result of the twist-out seems nourished and makes my soul smile!

Is It A MoTiFFated Must-Have?

Surely! As someone continually working to keep my scalp moisturized, I’m now depending on the incorporation of serums to keep my scalp healthy. Regarding its bang for its buck? I seriously encourage you to find a coupon or promo code to save some money, instead of going straight into purchasing it with its original $29 price tag. Now, if Pattern Beauty’s team is reading this article and wants to send me a promo code to share with my audience, I thank them!
