There is a specific kind of magic that happens when the air begins to shift. It is that first morning when the light hits the wall at a different angle, and suddenly, the horizon feels a little wider. As someone born in spring, April breathes new life into me. I see it as a reset. A season to bloom. Some seasons bring about intense growth, like a caterpillar in its chrysalis shaking fiercely to transform into a butterfly. It recognizes the beauty that comes from change, appreciates the progress of the past, but doesn’t stay stuck in what it used to be as its too busy flying into the new.
That is what drew me to Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s (MFK) latest citrus standout, Kurky. I am a fan of smelling great. Whether it is a designer perfume or otherwise. A few years ago, I decided to get back to my love of fragrance. I purchased the most incredible perfume in 2021, MFK Gentle Fluidity Gold.
Soon after, while leaving from my graduate program’s night class, I caught a whiff of an outstanding scent in the stairwell. I immediately asked my classmate the name of her perfume. She shared that it was MFK Baccarat Rouge 540. I had been wanting to smell that one for what felt like forever. The coronavirus restrictions of the time kept me out of beauty stores. But, after that distinguished scent hit my nose, it was love at first smell. MFK is someone who knows his worth and sets his price. A 2.4-ounce bottle will run you nearly $300. What makes it even worse it that it’s worth the money. I have repurchased both Baccarat and Gentle Fluidity after emptying their bottles. Sometimes you wish you didn’t like things that were so expensive. There have been dupes of his perfume as detailed in my Bath & Body Works Designer Dupes coverage, however he is one of one. In my eyes, the MFK brand was known for deep, mesmerizing scents with notes of amber. When I was made aware of him having a citrus perfume, I wanted to see if he could recreate the magic for those who love lighter scents. THE MAN BEHIND THE BRAND
Before the industry knew him as a namesake founder, Francis Kurkdjian was its greatest wunderkind. At just 24 years old, he broke the mold by creating the legendary Le Male for Jean Paul Gaultier. He did not just make a fragrance; he shifted the entire landscape of perfumery. Since then, his career has been a masterclass in high-stakes creation. From crafting the inescapable Baccarat Rouge 540 to his current role as the Perfume Creation Director for Christian Dior, his legacy is ironclad.
Yet, despite the corporate milestones and the global acclaim, Maison’s true passion is the "fragrance wardrobe." He views fragrance as a garment — an atmosphere you choose to wear. This brings us to the heartbeat of his latest work. While he is often associated with the deep, intoxicating weight of amber and wood, his creative spirit remains deeply tethered to a sense of wonder. This particular scent was born from a desire to capture a moment of pure, uncomplicated lightness. It is a nod to the version of himself that existed before the world-renowned accolades. By drawing on the nickname "Kurky," he invites us into a space where sophistication meets a gentle, wide-eyed nostalgia. Kurkdjian told Forbes, “Since I can remember, people always had a hard time pronouncing my Armenian family name. So Kurky is a friendly nickname given to me by my very close friends, it’s short for Kurkdjian, and some of them still call me that since I was little. I like the fact it resonates well with quirky and kooky, and sounds friendly. The name was born spontaneously, without too much deliberation, out of creativity and freedom. Like a sudden smile or a burst of laughter.” This fragrance feels like an intentional return to the spirit of discovery, asking us to trade our heavy, adult armor for a fragrance that feels like a sun-drenched memory. IT SMELLS LIKE A REMINDER TO CHOOSE HAPPY
We are all navigating times that require a lot of our internal reserves. The pressure to be "on" is constant, which is why carving out space for personal delight is a necessity rather than a luxury. Lately, I have found myself gravitating toward the hobbies that first sparked my curiosity as a girl. The reconnection with fragrance has been my saving grace. I literally use it as a part of my morning routine to set the tone for the day. I often ask myself questions like, “Do I want a fruity scent or a floral scent?” With Kurky, I get both.
As I write this article, I’m consistently intoxicated by its gourmand goodness. Gourmand is just a fancy word for edible scents. Right now, I smell edible and I love that for me. This one is a luxury splurge that you wear every day. At first sniff, I am enamored. It took me 20 minutes to think about how I wanted to describe this scent because my heart just wanted to type, “It smells good.” I couldn’t leave you hanging like that, because having three college degrees that were earned through many a papers’ written, I know how to extend a description like no other.
For some reason, this scent immediately reminded me of my childhood too. Those safe times filled with family, fun, and no bills. Oh, the good ole days. I had an infatuation with The Flintstones Orange Sherbert Push Up by Nestle and Kurky brought that memory to the forefront. Its tangy fruit accord note isn’t one that smells like an orange peel, rather like a sweet orange sherbert. If I’m being honest, I had a go at the tub of orange sherbert then too. That edible nature is what Kurky gives, balanced with its gourmand musk that sees cameos from vanilla and sandalwood. While it takes you back to childhood, no one will mistake this for a kid’s body mist. There is a layer of elegance to this perfume. Remember: Fragrance is never just about the liquid in the bottle. It is about the atmosphere we choose to inhabit. As we transition into spring, our wardrobes naturally lighten, and our energetic profiles should too. MFK Kurky performs beautifully in this in-between space. It has the presence to stand up to a crisp morning breeze while remaining airy enough for the midday sun. WHERE TO WEAR THIS SCENT
One of the things that I appreciate the most is the long-lasting nature of MFK fragrances. It is mind-blowing. I do spray my perfume generously. I’m not a two-pumps on the wrist type of woman and that usually ensures longevity. The compliments that I receive wearing his scents, even after 12-hours of running errands around the city, is a great feeling. By that time my nose has gotten adjusted and I don’t realize that it’s still on me. Kurky has been one that I have kept close. I’m savoring every drop, so it hasn’t made its errands debut. I have enjoyed it while working remotely to bring you in-depth beauty, business, and style journalism. Though, I have complimented myself on its staying power and it’s on par with the MFK olfactory house!
Since it costs so much to buy this perfume, here are nominal priced experiences where you can let your new scent blow in the wind:
IS THIS A MOTIFFATED MUST-HAVE?
It is an undisputed addition to your collection. As I am known as the queen of looking for a good deal, I did note that MFK offers a lower priced option for this scent that is exclusive to Bloomingdale’s called Kurky Eau Parfumée. That comes in a 2.4 oz bottle and is significantly cheaper being priced at $195. I do understand that is still an investment. This version is the closest that you’ll get to a body mist. While Eau de Parfum (EDP), the version that I reviewed above is a high oil and alcohol base, Eau Parfumée is a water-based, alcohol-free iteration designed as a soft-focus scent. As it carries the exact same playful fragrance notes, it is formulated to be a delicate skin option that is gentle enough for hair and sensitive skin.
EDP fragrances will always have a place in my heart because of how long they last. MFK has hit a gold mine with their EDP’s longevity and they know it pricing their product at nearly $300. That is the blessing and the curse of MFK fragrances. They are so good that you want them, but the cost of them is literally the price of a utility bill for your house. I’m not here to pressure into buying anything, but if you do, please use my affiliate links included in this article. Until then, stop by the perfume section of your designer department store and give it a sniff for yourself. You’ll be glad you took that moment to remind yourself of the joy from youth.
Which MFK fragrance is your favorite? If you don’t have a favorite yet, which one is on your wish list?
