A life full of vibrancy is more than the colorful clothes that you have in your closet. Your wardrobe extends far beyond those pieces. My favorite part of my appearance is what you cannot see, because it lies more in what you can feel. Fragrance is one of the most intimate things that you share with others by default. How cool would it be if there was perfume that was only available to your nose to smell? While that would be cool, I love seeing perfume as a bold statement that goes without saying. As the folks say these days: What’s understood doesn’t have to be explained. That’s often written in text as IFKYK. If you know, you know.
What I appreciate about Maison Francis Kurkdjian (MFK) is that none of his perfumes are meant only for your nose. They are bold expressions, even when they aren’t. His olfactory experience that he takes his audience through allows you to feel like it is custom made for your nose, and everyone else gets the benefit of getting a whiff of greatness.
I was first introduced to his fragrance house in 2021, and let me tell you, it’s been a beautiful ride ever since. While he has new greats, his older classics still find their way to my playlist. I have reviewed his latest Kurky, and will review more so sign up to my newsletter to stay in the know. For now, my top three in Aqua Media, Gentle Fluidity Gold, and the cult classic Baccarat Rouge 540 are the topic of discussion. All things excellence, right to your inbox. Clean smelling scents are like a refresher to my soul. There is a special power that comes with a calming fragrance, and when things get heavy in my life, this scent removes the weight.
It skips the soapy clichés and leans into a sharp, herbaceous vitality. The Italian bergamot hits like a burst of morning light, while the inclusion of hedione provides a sophisticated, grounded green note. It is the fragrance equivalent of a deep, intentional breath that provides endless moments of meditation. This one is just for you. If you practice square breathing to calm your nerves, you will love soaking this one in second by second. It takes a tribe. This digital editorial provides high-vibrancy journalism without a paywall. Gentle Fluidity Gold was a blind buy that is still one of my favorites. When retail stores were closed in the thick of the coronavirus pandemic, I allowed my intuition for fragrance notes to lead the way.
I’m glad its fragrance notes led to this version of Gentle Fluidity. MFK offers Gentle Fluidity Silver, which offers a completely different scent experience as its more masculine and isn’t my vibe. Its gold version is a showstopper. When I worked in corporate, a co-worker followed me down the hall to ask which perfume I was wearing that day. I did not know her since she worked on a different floor, and that scent created the opportunity for connection. That is just the first of many compliments I’ve received with this gem. It is rare to find a fragrance that feels both ethereal and substantial, yet the blend of coriander seeds and musk creates a silken veil that stays with you all day. The vanilla and amber woods don't scream for attention; they radiate a soft, expensive warmth. This is the scent for the woman who knows that her presence is felt the moment she enters a room, no announcements required. BACCARAT ROUGE 540
This was love at first sniff! I smelled this one during my time in graduate school. As class ended, a classmate was walking down the stairs in front of me and her scent trail made me stop to ask what she was wearing. She then let me know it was Baccarat Rouge 540. My thoughts immediately went: Wow! I had never smelled anything like it at that time.
BR540 is a definitive dupe magnet and a cultural phenomenon! Through my Bath & Body Works Dupe Guide, I’ve covered it extensively. While the B&BW dupe is no longer sold, Fine’ry has done a great job emulating the original in their The New Rouge. While they get super-duper close, MFK is still that guy. He created a fragrance that defies traditional categorization, blending the mineral edge of ambergris with the spicy warmth of saffron and cedarwood. There is a transparent, woody sweetness that holds its own. It is bold, poetic, and possesses a magnetic quality that lingers long after you've moved on to your next win. It isn't just a perfume; it is a signature. Channel Your Excellence
Curating a perfume collection is more than just selecting what's trending. It is a deeply personal practice that speaks to your spark. What makes you light up when you pop the perfume bottle and give it a little sniff. What allows for your heart to smile when you give it a plethora of sprays to make it last.
When you finally pick your scent for the day, it's about setting the tone. You channel a mood that makes you unbreakable and unshakeable to outside elements. It's you and you. Use one of these three scents to lean into your excellence to decide how you win!
Which one of these three MFK scents do you gravitate towards the most?
