Coconuts are everything! The multi-faceted superstar that you want to have in your corner at all times, baring no allergies. Ms. Coco for short, is there when you need her to keep you hydrated through regular water or to get you loose through grown folks’ water in a Pina Colada. Most importantly, its external benefits do wonders. It keeps your skin feeling nourished and smelling good. As a Black woman with 4c hair, I would be lost without it, because most of the products on the market recognize the power of coconut oil. I went without it for a month as I underwent extensive allergy testing and let me tell you, that sight was not pretty! Me and Ms. Coco are back on speaking terms and I’ve never appreciated her more. When Eau de Coconut dropped as a part of Bath & Body Works Everyday Luxuries collection, I was ecstatic! After first sniff, it brought me back to my 2019 favorite in At The Beach. Through my YouTube video breaking down the scents, you’ll see my excitement in making that connection. While it would’ve been nice if my job was done there, I knew that they wouldn’t dupe their own scent. So, I put on my journalist glasses and locked in on research.

I love that last month my beauty article, 6 Scents, 5 New Muses: Decoding 2026’s Bath & Body Works Designer Inspired Dupes, sparked such a vibrant discourse online. Much to my delight, my work made its way to Reddit. One user shared that I always have it on point and that she 10,000% agreed with my takes. I was also glad to see opposing opinions. Some disagreed with my connection between Eau de Coconut and Vanilla Powder, proclaiming instead that its true match is NEST Balinese Coconut.

With 10,000 global readers a month, I don't always know who is supporting my work behind the scenes. I am incredibly grateful to u/frostedfairy for sharing the article with the Reddit community and to u/ode2paranoia for the compliment that truly made my day.
A reddit user shared my 2026 Bath & Body Works Dupe vs. Designer Guide, which sparked debate about So MoTiFFated’s take on the matches. The comments were split, one user saying that So MoTiFFated always has it on point and agrees with each scent match. Another disagreed shared that its NEST Balinese Coconut and not Vanilla Powder.

However, I also observed that Reddit can be a place for skepticism followed by unnecessary scrutiny. The user who shared my work was met with comments suggesting her post was redundant or that the topic had been discussed heavily before. This brings me to an important standard for the So MoTiFFated community. When discussing a love for fragrance, there should always be room for respectful discourse. If you don’t want to join in on someone’s excitement, there is no need to rain on their parade. It is better to keep moving in your own direction rather than inflicting negative energy on someone else.

The suggestion that my work is identical to existing posts is where I must draw the line. My takes are original. They come from an MBA mind that conducts deep beauty investigative journalism to bring you these details. Having ranked number one for a year and outranking outlets like the New York Post and Cosmopolitan, I know my authority is earned. I hope this gives you as a new or returning reader even more confidence in the expertise on this page.

EAU DE COCONUT

EAU DE COCONUT: $18.95

  • Fragrance Family: Fruity & Bright
  • Key Notes: Coconut Milk, Tropical Lily, Vanilla Sandalwood
Eau de Coconut is more than a fragrance. It is a psychological shift in a new direction that pays homage to the past. To understand why this scent feels so familiar, look to the fan favorite At The Beach. That was my 2019 go-to mist that I wore during all seasons, much like I plan to do with this new release. The former contains the DNA of white frangipani blossoms and toasted coconut mixed with a sea salt breeze. While those notes defined an era, Eau de Coconut serves as its sophisticated evolution.

Imagine a scent that captures the unfiltered joy of a girls’ trip, full of loud belly laughs and a sun that never sets like in the 2017 film, Girls Trip. That “Flossy Posse” flow is exactly the getaway your skin needs. On a Tuesday, where normalcy kicks back in, this mist still serves you well. It wraps around your body like a milky vanilla coconut treat that boosts your confidence without the extra calories.

The lily note signals the calm confidence that you love in a partner who just brought you a fresh bouquet of lilies on this fantastic Valentine’s Day. This modern evolution is exactly what we want from a retailer like Bath & Body Works. It shows they are listening to their audience and using past purchasing data to drive the direction of their future product offerings.

THE CONTENDERS: VANILLA POWDER BY MATIERE PREMIERE OR BALINESE COCONUT BY NEST

The journey of discovering the matches for these two was pure joy. As someone who loves gourmand scents, I find that my restored love for coconut is the perfect match for my city-girl lifestyle. If you are a newbie to the fragrance community, "gourmand" simply refers to a scent that reminds you of an edible treat.

While #PerfumeTok is an incredible resource for sharing new finds, creators often assume that everyone knows the industry jargon. This can leave you feeling like you need a glossary of terms just to shop for a body mist. At So MoTiFFated, my goal is to keep you informed of the new while honoring historical knowledge.

As Editor-in-Chief, I am not only here to break down fragrance notes and tell you where to wear them. I want you to feel like your best self. That journey starts with prioritizing your intellect and understanding the architecture of the scents you choose to wear.

VANILLA POWDER

VANILLA POWDER: $230
  • Fragrance Family: Warm & Spicy
  • Key Notes: Top: Coconut Powder, Heliotrope; Middle: Vanilla Absolute Madagascar; Base: Musk Helvetolide
The nuance in finding a scent twin is determining which fragrance notes share a common denominator. The bottom line is that Eau de Coconut is a coconut scent that features floral and vanilla notes. The same applies to Vanilla Powder, even though its name might sway you otherwise. It is a magical, intoxicating scent. It leaves you wanting more as you enjoy your evening.

Leaning into the My, My, My energy of Johnny Gill, this fragrance has you ready to put on a red dress and slip on a black stiletto with flare. If you are feeling fancy, the muse is the Hot Chic Scallop Pointed Top Pump by Christian Louboutin. If you are feeling frugal, you can opt for its match in a 4-inch Sexy Pointed Toe High Heel by Coleter. Either way, the look must be finished with a classic red lip. Keeping with the "Muse versus Match" vibe, Ruby Woo by MAC is essentially the sister to Spotlight Red by Wet n’ Wild.

Vanilla Powder drops the guards of those around you as they lean in with surrender. Interestingly, the same cannot be said for its display in retail stores. This highly coveted scent is often kept under lock and key. I realized this while window shopping at a luxury department store where the sample was kept behind the display case. That layer of inaccessibility only adds to its desirability.

As far as the scent profile, it leans toward a rich vanilla with an unforgettable note of coconut. The reputation of this French house precedes it in maintaining long-lasting quality, and the musk note seals the deal. Musk is a unique category. It is like peppermint in the sense that once you know the smell, you simply describe it as itself. This specific musk is soft, clean, and features Musk Helvetolide, which gives it a slight pear flare with an ambrette seed teaser.

That musk is coupled with Heliotrope, nicknamed the "Cherry Pie Flower." It provides a sophisticated mix of vanilla, almond, and marzipan. Despite the micro-ties to nuts through those almond notes, the effect is nominal. It doesn't stand out enough to be a determining factor for those with sensitivities, but it adds a decadent depth that makes the "dessert" feel complete.

BALINESE COCONUT

BALINESE COCONUT: $98
  • Fragrance Family: Fresh
  • Key Notes: Coconut, Solar Frangipani, Creamy Sandalwood
If Vanilla Powder is a midnight stiletto, Balinese Coconut by NEST is a barefoot luxury retreat. To understand this scent, you have to understand its namesake. Balinese refers to the lush, spiritual island of Bali, Indonesia. This is the "Island of Flowers," where the scent of fresh offerings and tropical greenery fills the air. With my background in Digital Marketing and a decade of experience in corporate social responsibility, I am always interested to see how brands roll out marketing campaigns and whether they show genuine respect for the cultures they aim to appreciate.

NEST seems to have hit the mark respectfully. Even the leaves designed on the Balinese Coconut packaging serve a purpose. On the island of Bali, tropical leaves like the ones on the bottle acknowledge the tropical ferns and palm fronds deeply ingrained in their culture. They are used for everything from shade and decoration to the traditional daily offerings, Canang sari. The presence of these leaves’ grounds the scent in a specific geographic location. It moves the product away from a generic beach vacation to a luxury destination.

The floral soul of this fragrance is the Solar Frangipani, also known as Plumeria. This is the ultimate throwback note for the Bath & Body Works community. That floral note is a lush, creamy bloom that feels like a sun-drenched afternoon. When you pair frangipani with sandalwood, you get a scent that is undeniably fresh yet deeply grounded.
What is amazing is that this perfume does not actually contain a vanilla note. Much like how Bath & Body Works fragrance engineers concoct dupe formulas to mimic a scent without adding every specific ingredient, NEST achieved this effect naturally. On the dry down, it wears so sweet and milky that you would instinctively believe it is a coconut vanilla blend because of how powdery it feels on the skin.

The staying power alone makes this scent a collectible. I sprayed a scent stick for in-store testing on February 9 and as I write this on February 14, the fragrance still lingers. This longevity aided me in writing such a detailed description. While $98 for a 1.7-ounce bottle may seem steep, other luxury brands charge that for a mere travel size. For context, a .33-ounce travel spray of Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry retails for $90. That is the same designer powerhouse I covered in my previous investigative piece, Oh, Cherry is a Cute Dupe for 2 Designer Perfumes.

After researching the intentionality behind the fragrance, the thoughtful packaging, and the marketing, the question remains. Is this enough for me to change my mind from my original pairing of Eau de Coconut and Vanilla Powder?

The Comparison The Match: Eau de Coconut The Muse: Vanilla Powder The Muse: Balinese Coconut
Fragrance Family Fruity & Bright Warm & Spicy Fresh
Top Notes Coconut Milk Coconut Powder, Heliotrope Coconut
Middle Notes Tropical Lily Vanilla Absolute Madagascar Solar Frangipani
Base Notes Vanilla Sandalwood Musk Helvetolide Creamy Sandalwood
The Investment $18.95 $230.00 $98.00

THE WINNER IS . . .

There isn’t a clear winner in my book. My mood sways with each day. Somedays that causes my nose to lean towards an exquisite vanilla coconut scent in Vanilla Powder. Other days my body wants to go full on coconut sandalwood and that can be found in Balinese Coconut.

Now if I’m being forced to choose one, which I am, because that is why you read this article, I would shift my previous muse match to select NEST Balinese Coconut as the winner! The reason being, it has sandalwood like Eau de Coconut. It is also the option that your wallet will prefer, coming in at $132 less than Vanilla Powder. Honestly, for that cost savings, you can fix your nose to finding the similarities in Balinese Coconut & Eau de Coconut!

What I have noticed from covering these designer/dupe matches for more than a year is that Bath & Body Works tends to lean towards luxury designer brands. Whether it be Parfums de Marly, Jo Malone, Burberry, etc., they tend to reenvision the fanciest scents with the most astronomical price tags, so we can get them at a lower price. At the same time, they have matched with brands like Phlur and Snif, which makes it more likely this could be a NEST dupe.

The beauty of it is, Bath & Body Works will likely never confirm the dupe matches. That is most likely due to legal protection, so they don’t run into intellectual property issues. In their mind, these are always inspired by and never “duplicates,” that we call dupes. They leave that to us as consumers, garnering millions of impressions in social engagement, while racking up sales.

This is so reminiscent of their Viva Vanilla, whose analysis is detailed in the article: New Bath & Body Works Dupes for Designer Perfumes. That fragrance had three scents that were touted as its designer match in Kayali Vanilla 28, Eilish by Billie Eilish, and Vanilla Vice by Snif. Considering that history, we should be glad the debate for Eau de Coconut’s match was only two.

Whether you decide to select the more luxurious option in Vanilla Powder, or you decide to go with the solar option in Balinese Coconut, you can’t go wrong! I am someone that loved to blind buy perfume during the isolating days of the coronavirus pandemic, however now I value the trip to the store to preview scents to be able to share them with my audience. If you do decide to purchase, please buy from one of the links that I have listed in this article. As an independent journalist, the commission from those sales helps to keep this engine running!
