Did they meet or miss the mark with its products and accompanying 360-degree marketing campaign?

Hey now! This is what dreams are made of? That’s what Bath & Body Works wants us to believe with their new collection of four fragrances centered around nostalgia and fruit. With my having gone to business school to study marketing, both traditional and digital, the rollout was interesting to me. What I appreciated about B&BW is that they seemed to be one of the nostalgic brands that focused more on the products and less on celebrity marketing campaigns. There may be an influencer or two with several social media rollouts that honestly seem to overconsume during their sales with sponsored haul videos. Not to be a skeptic, but I do often wonder if they’re going to use those products before they go bad. I have run this blog since 2020, most recently doing it full-time and through my own accumulation of products, it’s starting to be where I don’t need anything else even though covering them is my job. I’m working through how that looks strategy wise, but back to their switch-a-roo this go ‘round.
Seeing the rollout of their Fruit Fusion collection caught me off guard with the direction and the celebrity ambassador, because usually their collaborations seem to be brand based. I.e., Milk Bar, Vera Bradley, etc. So, the about-face to include a celebrity that most of us know from childhood because of the hit show, Lizzie McGuire, to being the face of a fruity campaign that seemed overly suggestive, left me puzzled. The set-up with see through white clothing soaked in faux rain, to the skin-forward creative direction of Hilary Duff with a bare torso and shoulders and her holding a bottle of body wash with suds all over . . . just missed the mark for me. Notably because the products in this collection are childlike with a soft, almost squishy, cap for the body mists and their containing a charm that corresponds to a fruit scent of choice.
Of course, I expect that from the designer luxury brands as I literally clicked on Tom Ford’s site for something and all I saw was bottom and legs, and was like “okay?” That’s certainly a direction to take for your brand. That’s where skin is expected, but with Bath & Body Works, I like seeing them as the brand that I loved in middle school, one that was a status symbol of scent, to one that followed me into adulthood and supports my smelling great for less through their 2026 Everyday Luxuries Collection.

There were two quotes that stood out to me after reading their July 6 press release announcing this new line. In addition to this being a 360-degree marketing campaign where they employ traditional and digital media, particularly in key markets and those near Duff’s upcoming concert venues, they shared other intentions.
“This summer, Duff returns to touring for the first time in 18 years, with a new album and a new chapter that has reignited fan devotion across generations. Bath & Body Works, itself on a path of brand evolution under new leadership, recognized the alignment.” “Fruit Fusion is designed as a long-term franchise, with new scents and formats planned over time. It is the latest proof point of where Bath & Body Works is headed: a brand that leads with performance, shows up in culture, and builds products consumers come back to every day.”
Having pinpointed this being one of their most comprehensive marketing campaigns to date, they highlight how this collaboration with a celebrity who is soon to tour aligns with them because they are intensely pushing a noticeable shift in brand strategy. They ended with noting this collection will be one that should stand the test of time with planned expansions in the future.
We have all noticed the shift in their brand direction as I examined their CEO shakeup of selecting former Nike executive, Daniel Heaf, as their leader and his new vision when I covered the launching of the Bath & Body Works Amazon Storefront. Around that time an outlet, TheStreet, reported statements from B&BW’s financial earnings call where Heaf said the following “With pricing, I think our strategy is very clear. . . We have relied too often in the past on deeper and more frequent discounts. As we go into 202 . . . we’re expecting to get paid for our innovation.”
As much as I enjoyed Mufasa: The Lion King, I know the gist of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s lyrics in Bye Bye anywhere. The Bath & Body Works shift in brand strategy is why their iconic $5.95 sales seem few and far between now, when last year it seemed to be a thing every few weeks. It’s why they have now shifted to having their products sold in Ulta Beauty. It’s because they’re trying very hard to not be known as a mall-brand and more of a global retailer that offers high-quality affordable luxury that’s accessible in this digital age.
I’m all for it, but it seems disjointed. Their press release mentioned, “The franchise will also roll out on the Bath & Body Works Amazon storefront, marking the brand's first major product launch on the platform since its debut earlier this year,” yet I couldn’t find evidence that my favorite scent from this collection, Banana Blend, and its products ever existed on their Amazone Storefront. From the collection in general, it’s the only one without a hand sanitizer.
For someone that spent years in grad school analyzing brand strategy, theirs is hard to follow. Especially since I spent so much time covering their dupes last year, seeing this abrupt shift with an execution we can all agree could be stronger, it’s a bit painful to watch for an analytical thinker. That being said, I’m sure you came here to see cute pictures and to get my take on the scents, so let’s get to the business!
What I did notice instantly was the complexity of the key notes in this collection’s fragrances. Normally, Bath & Body Works lists three key notes and that’s all she wrote. While that remains true on their product packaging, their site shows more depth through the addition of fragrance verbiage that’s normally associated with designer fragrance with its notes having subsets, i.e., top, middle, and base notes. That is because Bath & Body Works partnered with master perfumers across four of the world’s most prestigious global fragrance houses — Givaudan, DSM-Firmenich, MANE, and Symrise — to craft the lineup.
Instead of relying solely on in-house development for quick, synthetic turnarounds, bringing in perfumers like Christine Hassan (Givaudan), Alexandra Monet (DSM-Firmenich), Gino Percontino and Patricia Choux (MANE), and Laure Breysse (Symrise) shifted the fundamental architecture of these scents. They approached the collection with fine-fragrance intentionality, incorporating technical extraction methods like living fruit Headspace technology and structuring the olfactory profiles with distinct top, middle, and base note movements. The digital product copy simply reflects that elevated, multi-tiered perfumery standard.

As I alluded to earlier, Banana Blend is my favorite out the group! It’s not fully surprising to me, but I am flabbergasted that I enjoy this one as much as I do. On several occasions since purchase, I have found myself lounging at home and spraying this body mist. While in the store shopping, it first smelled to me like a banana popsicle tastes. Actually, there are so many banana puns that just came into my mind and you’re going down that rabbit hole with me!
It could make you feel like you felt after you kept happily repeating “banana” after you saw Minions for the first time! Matter of fact, it could be the feeling you get after viewing Minion & Monsters on the big screen this summer.
Better yet, it could make you want to dance and act like you’re Akelah and The Bee spelling b-a-n-a-n-a-s like Gwen Stefani did in her hit song, Hollaback Girl. Word to the wise, please don’t be that type of girl this season. You’re valuable and you better not forget it? Okay? Great!
Shake that Laffy Taffy! This reference goes without saying, but if I must! D4L made a cultural anthem during my middle school years with hit song, Laffy Taffy, that had everyone practicing their ankle, knee, and back bends simultaneously! That’s the one that I’ve heard referenced the most when I was shopping in-store in Bath & Body Works. As soon as I heard it, I thought about the great similarity because one could argue that the smell of this fragrances reminds you of the taste and aroma of the banana flavored Laffy Taffy candy.
The rest of the scents to me seem like background dancers to the main attraction of the banana, but no shade, completely. Never forget, Tupac was a background dancer to Digital Underground and is undeniably one of the greatest rappers of all time.
So, if you enjoy the rest of the fragrances in this collection, I love that for you!
BERRY BLISS
TANGERINE TWIRL
WATERMELON WHIRL
Despite my thorough brand analysis for the rollout, I do enjoy my 8-oz bottle of body mist in the Banana Blend scent and I’m glad that it brings back nostalgia without giving an adolescent vibe. But, you know me by now. I’ll keep giving Tiffany’s Take while making you aware of new products on the market. You’re always free to decided which products work for you, if any!
Let me know, what’s your favorite scent from the Fruit Fusion collection?
